Although relatively
young in football terms, Burton Albion Football Club has seen it's fair share
of ups and downs during more than half a century of existence.
Since it's inception in 1950, the club has scaled the heights - an FA
Cup Third Round appearance while still in it's infancy, Southern League Cup
glory, and the twin towers of Wembley - and plumbed the depths, since it
was dragged kicking and screaming into the world as a late arrival to the
post-war football boom.
The ignominy of relegation, egotistical chairmen, managerial walk-outs
and, on several occasions near bankruptcy - life has rarely been dull, although
the word 'underachiever' could have been coined for the Brewers, who still,
52 years on have yet to win a league title.
We've seen some memorable matches though, and witnessed some great
players sporting the yellow and black shirt - Jack Stamps, Peter Taylor,
Ian Storey-Moore, Nigel Clough.. the list goes on.
This then is the story, complete with pictures, in full - from
Wellington Street, to Wembley, the Birmingham League to the Southern League,
the NPL, and back again. Let us hope the most exciting chapter is still being
written.... |
