'Rovers rubbish speculation'
Gresley Rovers today dismissed speculation the club was to resign from the Dr. Martens League due to financial problems and the condition of the Moat Ground as "complete rubbish".

The story surfaced on the Burton Albion supporters' Internet forum this week, claiming the Moatmen would quit the league they won two seasons ago to voluntarily drop down one level of the pyramid to play in the Midland Division. Posted by someone calling themselves "CD Rock", the story said only two teams would be relegated from the Premier Division this season because of Gresley's imminent resignation and similar financial problems which may cause Merthyr Tydfil to fold.

Moat Ground financial director Lance Luckhurst, however, hit back today by dismissing the story as mischief making and saying it was a mystery to him where it had come from.

He said: "This is complete and utter rubbish. I don't know who writes these things on the Internet but it simply isn't true. I was shown something written about Gresley on the Internet last year which was also completely untrue and certainly didn't come from the club, and we were considering at the time what action we could take and whether to respond.

"Certainly as far as everyone here is concerned, Gresley Rovers will be playing in the Dr. Martens Premier League next season."

Speculation over Gresley's future has been ongoing, however, since the indefinite postponement of plans to move  from the crumbling Moat Ground to a new purpose-built stadium in Albert Village.

Hastings Town, however, are one club who will be leaving the Dr. Martens League at the end of the season after tendering their resignation in pursuit of a place in the Rymans League.
