'Tough Clough hits gossips'
Burton Albion's bright young boss Nigel Clough has hit out at the rumour mongers who link his name with every major non-league managerial post.
With three vacant Conference jobs this week after the return of David Webb to Southend United and the sackings of Northwich's Mark Gardiner and Nuneaton's Brendan Phillips, local media speculation had linked the former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool star with at least two of the vacancies.

Strongest tip this week was that he would make the shortish trip across the Midlands to Nuneaton. But Clough, who led his Dr. Martens League championship contenders in Friday night's 1-1 draw at Cambridge, was quick to squash the stories.

"Speculation about me gets more and more ridiculous by the day," he said, "I am very, very happy where I am."

And if the Nuneaton board had ideas about approaching Clough, his condemnation of Phillips' sacking could have stilled them.

"I find it very strange that a club can axe a manager who has done so much for them, so early in the season," said Clough - an outspoken comment that could just as well have come from his famous father.

Meanwhile ex-Athletico Madrid boss Colin Addison, who quit Scarborough only ten weeks ago, and Hinckley United manager Dean Thomas are said to be among the frontrunners to take over the vacant post after the swift departure of Phillips, sacked at Nuneaton on Monday...
