'Clough - Liverpool will win title under Houllier'
Former Liverpool striker Nigel Clough has backed Gerard Houllier to lead Liverpool to the Premiership title next season.

Clough, who has led Burton Albion into the Nationwide Conference for the first time in the club's history has great respect for Houllier.

Clough said: "They have already achieved tremendous things under Gerard Houllier and they are still a young team, which means they will continue to develop and improve.

"They had every chance of winning the league this season, but given the age of the squad they will have a great chance for the next five or 10 years as well.

"These are exciting times at Anfield. Going for so long without winning the league is too long for a team like Liverpool and I know they will do it sooner or later."

The former Reds number seven picked out Liverpool captain Sami Hyypia as a key performer and joked he wouldn't mind having the Finn at the centre of Burton Albion's defence.

Clough said: "I think Sami should be able to hold his own in the Conference. He has been a fantastic signing for Liverpool - the rock around which Gerard Houllier has built everything else.

"Liverpool have been looking for a successor to Alan Hansen for the past decade, and in Hyypia they have found one, but when he comes to Burton, they'll have to start looking again. Sorry!"

Clough said he has no regrets about his move to Anfield and has fond memories of the 3-3 draw with Manchester United where he scored twice.

Clough said: "People still talk to me about that game as if it were yesterday, and I remember it well as it was my first experience of a Liverpool-Manchester United game.

"To come back from 3-0 down was a fantastic achievement, especially with the whole of Anfield roaring us on. It was so important to the fans and players to do well against them, as it is now, so it was a wonderful night.

"I have a lot of good memories from those days and I wouldn't swap going to Liverpool for anything. Spending two-and-a-half years around people like John Barnes, Ian Rush and Jan Molby was a fantastic experience for me and I relished the opportunity."
