Pubs near the ground - Town centre pubs

Eton Park is situated on the North side of Burton, on the border of the districts of Horninglow and Stretton.

T
he best way to approach the ground from most directions is via the A38 (Burton North exit) a road which links with the A50, which in turn runs between the M1 and M6 motorways.

Eton Park is about one mile along Derby Street/ Derby Road from Burton Station (see the town centre map for location of station)...

The Football Tavern **
Princess Way, Burton-on-Trent, Staffs (on club car park) (01283) 575756
This place is owned by Burton Albion FC, and naturally sits outside the football ground. It used to be a social club and unfortunately that shows inside. It is a large barn-like building, handy for match days but not for much else unless you're into dominoes and other people's kids racing around.

Serves draught Bass and a guest beer and does have large screen Sky TV. Personally I think the club could do better. Incidentally the Albion Suite inside the ground is better but is usually turned over to sponsors before the game - but is open to supporters after the match.

The Great Northern ****
Wetmore Road (01283) 509531
From Eton Park, head back to Pirelli island, go straight over into Hawkins Lane and this place is 100 yards on the left, just over the bridge. Now owned by local independent Burton Bridge Brewery, with their quality real ales on tap, the Northern is a favourite pre-match meeting point for many Brewers fans. Recently refurbished and was due to have Sky Sports installed in time for the start of the 2003-2004 season.

The Anglesey Arms ***
The Green, Stretton (off Main Street) (01283) 742801
Located 10 minutes walk from Eton Park in the centre of Stretton (turn left at Victoria Wine). This is a large Bass establishment serving a decent pint of Bass and serving good value meals. There is a comfortable lounge or a more basic bar.

There is a pool table and large screen Sky TV in the bar. This has won so many mystery customer awards you would think they were given out by Bass. Come to think of it they were given out by Bass! Also has a large garden with a Bouncy Castle in summer.

The Beech Inn **
Derby Road, Stretton (01283) 561811
Marston's local which has often been a departure point for Burton Albion away coaches. Situated on the busy Derby Road between Pirelli and McDonalds. This pub has a bar on the front, a smaller lounge at the rear and a beer garden. This used to do reasonable food and serve a half decent pint of Pedigree. It may still do so, but at the time of writing it has changed hands so many times in the last year I have lost track.

The Mill House ***
Stretton (01283) -
Part of a national chain of family bar/restaurants and situated by the canal between Stretton church and Derby Road. This place is a good 10 minute walk from Eton Park (but less than 1 minute in the car) and is very handy for people approaching from the A38 - just turn right at the island by Ian Shipton Cars.

The food is good , but not cheap, and beers include Bass, Marston and Theakstons. Great for people with kids as there is both an indoor and outdoor play area, but if other peoples kids or the smell of chips puts you off your beer then this is not the place for you.

The Derby Inn *
Derby Road (01283) 543674
Small two-room local on Derby Street. Apparently serves good Marston's as well as retailing eggs, veg, bread etc. You will either love it or hate it.

The Monk's Bridge ***
Church Road, Stretton (01283) 562507
Another pub in Stretton, just a bit past the centre of the village, and creeping in (just) as handy for the football. A modern Marstons local with a large lounge and smaller bar.

Reasonably priced food in the lounge though I have to admit I have not as yet tried any. The menu looks pretty good for a pub though it has to be said. It is also next door to a half decent chippy (which does excellent chicken kebabs)
