Burton Pub Guide << main >>
Pubs near the ground - Town centre pubs

So you've been to the match, and watched your team suffer a drubbing at the hands of the mighty Brewers. What better way to drown your sorrows than to repair to the town centre and check out one of the many fine drinking establishments there?

T
he pubs are split into two sections - your classic traditional boozer, and those new fangled 'fun pubs'...

Beer, beer, we want more beer

Is it me, or does this picture get more blurred the more I think about beer?

Drinking and driving is a crime, so why not let Britains fast, efficient, comfortable rail system (well that's what is says on the Virgin Trains website) take the strain, and get yourself a taxi from the station to the ground...

The Roebuck ****
Station Street (corner of Moseley Street) (01283) 568660
On Station Street, and the first pub you would arrive at turning right out of the station. This is also known as the Burton Ale House in honour of the brew that used to be brewed over the road at Ind Coope.

An interesting arched building with a long thin bar, this pub serves a good choice of well kept ales. The lunchtime menu is small but interesting.
The Roebuck

The Devonshire Arms ***
Station Street (01283) 562392
This pub is like the Tardis - far bigger inside than it looks from the outside! Serves the excellent range of Burton Bridge beers, plus guest beers and bottled Belgian beers.

Probably the best pub in town for getting quietly merry on unusual beers! The "Devvie" is generally welcoming and friendly. The lunchtime food (though admittedly in someone else's opinion) is good value as well.

top
The Alfred ****
Derby Street (01283) 562178
On Derby Street but only five minutes from the station. A former CAMRA 'Pub of the Year' and another serving excellent Burton Bridge Ales. Games room on the back with (possibly) Burton's only bar football table. The food is also tasty, cheap and a good plateful. Recommended!

The Station Hotel *
Borough Road (01283) 564955
Big place next to, as the name suggests, the station. This place has seen better days and has been through a succession of landlords.

Wetherspoons or someone similar could do big things with the place, but the building is so large it would require the sort of large capital injection that a normal tenant could not afford.

Handy though for the rail traveller - if only to have a pint and order a taxi!

The Lord Burton ****
High Street (01283) 564955
A Wetherspoon's pub, which as we all know means a huge range of fantastically cheap beers and not quite so fantastic service on a Friday or Saturday night - the latter usually being a result of the former. They also have a national menu of realistically priced meals. Try as you might you can't knock the formula : stack it up and sell it cheap works for me!

The Burton Bridge Inn ****
Bridge Street (01283) 536596
Though a 20-25 minute walk from the station this is the 'tap' of the previously mentioned brewery, and a mecca for real ale enthusiasts.

Recently extended to include a no-smoking room this is well worth a visit if you love your beer. However there are no bandits, music or pool tables if they are what you seek.

Duffey's ***
Market Place (01283) 566932
On the Market Place, formerly the Royal Oak, and before that, apparently, a police station. The owner (named Duffy of course) says he has tried to create a "local" in the town. He usually is open late on Fridays and Saturdays, serves guest beers such as Abbot Ale, and has regular live music. It does a brisk food trade at lunchtime, and in the milder weather you can sit outside and watch the world pass by!

The Dog ***
Lichfield Street (01283) 742811
Used to be an O'Neils Irish theme bar characterised by expensive Guinness and shutting before 11. Has now reverted to its old name and reduced prices somewhat though the "faux-Irish" trinkets still abound. No real ale but the Guinness is good, there is a pool table and Sky TV. Word of warning thought the "Irish" names are still on the toilet doors so work out whether you are a "Fir" or a "Mna"!

The Cooper's Tavern ***
Cross Street (01283) 532551
A small back street pub, worth a visit just to see the bar, where beer is poured directly from the barrels lined up on a shelf.

These include Bass (which being next door to the brewery is lovely), Pedigree and Kimberley Classic.

Yates' Wine Lodge
High Street (01283) 512608
Familiar chain pub. Cafe Bar type atmosphere during the day. Disco bar by night. Always busy at weekends but not as cheap as the Wetherspoons next door.

top
Chicago Rock Cafe
Middle Way (01283) 566330 - e-mail
A recent addition to Burton night life. American bar diner that is more of a nightclub at weekends. Very busy but with a pleasing selection of music (ie 50's to 80's) for the non teens amongst us. Bar open to 1am weekends. Drinks are not cheap though but watch out for some excellent tribute bands on Thursday nights.

top
Cafe Mocha
High Street (01283) 564382
Loud and trendy bar with a late licence, used to be 'Barnaby's'. Sometimes doesn't open until later in the evening. The third of three neighbouring pubs on High Street (with Wetherspoon's and Yates's) so handy if you cant be bothered to walk far!

top
Edwards
Station Street (01283) 566803
Another pub with loud music and a late bar at weekends ('til 1am).Music tends to be "party" Saturday or "dance" Friday. No real ale but alcopops are the common drink in here anyway!

top
Gravity
Station Street (01283) 500482
Formerly known as TP Woods, and another cafe/eaterie by day and disco by night. Mansfield ales are served though and the music is a cross section of all sorts. This pub also has a pool table and plenty of video games, but does not have a late bar (yet?)

top
Peggy's Sports Bar
High Street (corner of Worthington Way) (01283) 535326
Other than the presence of a big screen in the front room there is nothing to say why this is a "Sports Bar". Molly's Disco Bar perhaps! However a rare (perhaps only) outlet for Everard's beers in the town. Not bad beer if it didnt keep remind me of Larry Grayson for some strange reason!

top
Blue Posts Sports Bar
High Street (corner of Worthington Way) (01283) 742881
Is it compulsory to call the pubs on this side of High Street "sports bars"?

This does have some fake sporting memorabilia a well as the loud music and basketball shaped beer pumps.
The Blue Posts

top
The Pickled Gherkin
Market Place (01283) 564397
I have to admit I have never even been in this "pre-club bar" owned by the people who own half the night clubs in the town. Young and loud!
