"The
Pilgrims" |
| Quite
possibly the hardest ground to find in the Dr. Marten's League
(maybe with the exception of Gresley), to such an extent that, in an
impromptu BrewersNet survey, 90% of Cambridge residents questioned
either (a) didn't know where it was (b) thought they knew where it
was but actually were talking about Cambridge United's ground, or
(c) didn't even know there was a football team in Cambridge. Not
surprising really, as most people who live there are too busy riding bicycles,
punting down the river and generally acting in a foppish manner to be
bothered with such common pursuits as football.
City of course
once competed on equal terms with Cambridge United, before the "U's"
had the temerity to get elected to the Football League, taking most of the
City's football fans with them. The "Lilywhites" are left with a small,
but enthusiastic, band of supporters to carry the torch. A newish
ground, built next to the old one, with a quite impressive main
stand and excellent clubhouse, but only shallow terracing around the
other three sides. Plenty of parking spaces though, and the cheese salad
rolls are delicious.
Perennial relegation
candidates, they only avoided this fate last season due to Hastings Town's
reluctant withdrawal to the Southern/ Eastern Division. |

Stuff to do: |
Apparently,
there is some kind of university there, so I heard. Apart
from the Colleges which draw most people in there
are numerous churches, museums, shops selling tourist tat, quaint
tea-rooms, and some decent pubs. For the full tourist guide,
check out
Cambridge-UK, complete with scary pipe-organ
music. Also,
this Guide
to Cambridge Pubs might come in handy. As
with Bath, the incredible influx of tourists
brings with it traffic chaos, and the added hazard of
thousands of bicycles everywhere you go. |
Famous people? |
Samuel
Pepys (diarist)... EM Forster (novelist)..William Pitt...
(Prime Minister).. Oliver Cromwell... (Victor of King Charles
I)..Sir Isaac Newton (mathematician and
physicist)... Richard Madeley ("Countdown" presenter)...
there's no end to the illustrious names educated at Cambridge.
Current residents of the city include Clive James (roly-poly
Antipodean TV presenter), Professor Stephen Hawking
(scientist) and Geoffrey Archer (writer of "classic"
literature.) |

Cambridge
City's ground is located in the Chesterton
district, at the town end of the A1309 Cambridge-Ely
road, off an unmarked road, behind a
big office block, with only a faded wooden sign
on a low wall by the road to alert you to it's
presence. Be warned!
For those travelling from the North
take the A14, follow signs for Cambridge A1307. This will
take you down Huntingdon Road. Continue to follow this road until
you reach a major traffic light controlled junction with a Texaco garage
on your left. Turn left, and follow the right hand lane through the
lights and into Victoria Road (A1134). Continue along this
road going past a Chinese take-away (The Blow Out) on your right and
Blockbuster video shop on your left. At the bottom of this road you
will reach a large round-a-bout (although it does not look like one) with
a large shop on it (Staples). Go straight on taking the left hand lane past
the Portland Arms Pub on your left. Carry on for 100 yards and the entrance
to the ground is on your left, opposite Tommy Tuckers take-away.
From the South leave the
M11 at Junction 13. At the top of the slip road turn
right to head towards Cambridge on the A1303 Madingley
Road. Continue on until you reach a mini roundabout, take the first
exit into Northampton Street then across the lights into
Chesterton Lane. At the end of this road you will come to a large
roundabout with a shop on it (Staples). From this point follow the
directions as above. There is ample parking at the ground.
