Broadfield Stadium
The gleaming new Broadfield Stadium

New council-owned stadium which opened for the 97-98 season to replace the old Town Mead ground, and by all accounts the model of what a new football ground should be - with excellent design, layout and facilities. Easy to find too, just a goal-kick away from Junction 7 of the M25. As so often happens, swanky new surroundings brought the crowds flooding in in unprecedented numbers in their first season, though attendances tailed off in proportion to the team's league position.

The crowds continued to flock somewhere else last season, as the efforts of former manager Billy Smith were hampered by severe financial problems which continue to threaten their future, with the club being placed in administration in the early weeks of this season.

Their somehwhat isolated geographical position can't help matters, though the loss of Sussex rivals Hastings was compensated slightly by the promotion of "neighbours" Margate and Havant!

Stuff to do:

Crawley is a new town, so there's not much in the way of history. You could though enjoy the thoroughly modern experience of the brand new Crawley Leisure Park, actually built on the site of Crawley's old Town Mead ground, and includes a multi-screen Virgin Cinema, and the mother of all Pizza Hut's! The town is only a short drive from Brighton if you fancy making a weekend of it. Gatwick Airport is also close at hand should you wish to fly in! Check out Keith's Guide to Crawley for more local detail.

Famous people?

Gareth Southgate (footballer and ace-penalty taker) was born and bred in Crawley. As was Robert Smith, frontman of indie favourites The Cure.
On the air: Try Radio Mercury on 102.7 FM or 1521 on your Medium Wave dial. Alternatively, fiddle around and try and locate BBC Southern Counties Radio - we think it's on 104.8/ 95.1 FM in that part of Sussex
On the net: Crawley Town website

Directions:

Getting to the new  Broadfield Stadium couldn’t be easier. Follow whichever road you fancy until you reach the mother of all roundabouts, the M25. Then head for Junction 7 and leave the motorway at this junction and take up the M23. On the M23 head for Junction 11 (Pease Pottage turn off). Go up the slip road and turn right, going across the motorway until you come to the last exit. This is Pease Pottage Hill and it runs parallel with the motorway. At the bottom of this hill is a roundabout, take the left turn and you will be in the car park of Crawley Town FC.
