  "The Martyrs"

Merthyr Tydfil
Penydarren Park,
Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan, South Wales CF47 8RF
Tel: (01685) 384102
Ground capacity: 10,000  Seats: 1,500
Ground which famously staged European football in the 80's, looking a bit rundown nowadays. Decent size main stand, large covered terrace opposite, permanently closed "family stand" behind one goal, open terracing behind the other. Not the easiest ground to find either, a single entrance at the top of a side road amidst tightly packed terraced housing- you'll see it up on the hill as you drive past but trying to actually get to the thing is a different matter. If you arrive early you can drive straight in to the car park paying at the gate as you go.

Merthyr don't get the biggest crowds, but there's usually a good, partisan atmosphere inside Penydarren Park. And forget any pre-conceived images you might have of hostile Welsh folk - Merthyr is one of the most welcoming grounds to visit, with generally friendly supporters and officials.

Runners-up in the League in the 97-98 season, the Martyrs have struggled since popular manager Colin Addison resigned amidst boardroom wrangling. The club were placed in administration last season, and a consortium backed by popular Welsh entertainer Owen Money took over, to assure the long term future of the club.

Stuff to do:

The nearby Brecon Beacons National Park offers breathtaking scenery.

Directions:

Exit the M5 at Junction 8 onto the M50. Continue on this road through Ross-on-Wye, heading for Abergavenny. Then follow the ‘Heads of the Valley’ road, signposted Merthyr Tydfil. After 16-18 miles you come to a roundabout (near a McDonalds on the left). Take the town centre road passing three roundabouts. At the first set of traffic lights turn right, after 100 yards turn right again and then right again at the church, right yet again and follow the road around and you come to Pennydarren Park, the home of Merthyr Tydfil. There is limited parking at the ground and plenty of street parking.
